Some of us just can never get enough of this sport no matter what our age may be. At 57, most people would say there is no way you can still be actively training and competing. This 57 year old guy still is and loving it and has no plans on stopping!!!!
Training in Houston at Precision Martial Arts with black belt Tom Dinklage as instructor, one of the key elements to being past the prime of training and still being able to do it is to train SMART!!!! This is where your instructor plays a key role. Some dojos would tend to pass the more "mature" guy up for the younger stud who comes in. After all, more than likely the younger guy is the one who will be more actively competing. However, I have been very fortunate to have an instructor who pays attention to all his students no matter what the age or ability of the student is.
My advice is to shop around and find the right dojo that suits your needs. This is good to do no matter what your age may be.
Just because you have reached a certain number in terms of age is not a reason to think that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or submission grappling is beyond your capabilities. Just think of the joy you will feel when you tap out a guy in his 20's and his response is "How old are you??????".
Train Hard - Train Often - but most of all TRAIN SMART!!!!
