Bring Grappler Quest To Edmonton, Alberta Canada

Puppettamer's picture

For my first blog I am going skip all formal introductions and go right to something that currently is bugging me. Why do promotions push off one of the biggest hot bed’s in martial arts today? That being Edmonton, Alberta Canada. This can be argued Alberta as a whole to be honest, this province holds more mixed martial events and grappling tournaments then any place I have seen to date. When we go to tournaments we see a lot of people from B.C and Manitoba tag along cause they do not get what we have here in Alberta. Such a shame with so man great fighters and grapplers with an urge to compete but have no major tournaments to test there skills. Every year there a large tournaments to go to such as Mind Body Soul and Capital City then draw a large crowd and great competition. Followed by many may smaller tournaments such as the Series, Calgary Fight Club Challenger Series, Lethbridge Grappling tournaments, Edson Team Grappling, and BDB martial arts. But there is no big named events that come here no Grapplers Quest, no Naga, no Abu Dhabi ect. List goes on. I always hear of or have to travel out of province to go to any large event and they almost always disappoint with the number of competitors who actually show up.

This is why it bugs me so much that there is nothing ever like a grapplers quest here we have a huge fan base for martial arts and an event like Grapplers Quest would be huge here. There are MMA event practically every weekend and they all have huge crowds show up, even grappling tournaments there are always good sized crowds from families to friends and partners. An event like Grapplers Quest coming to Edmonton would really draw a crowd and a very large group of competitors from all ages and genders. There is a large group of kid grapplers as well as female grapplers in Alberta. Cities from all over Alberta, B.C and Manitoba would send guys to compete in such a highly regarded and highly regarded event. Cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Fort Mcmurray, Red Deer and Lethbridge all have large MMA and Grappling teams. This is leaving out all the other provinces that would more then likely send out groups of guys as they already do so for smaller events. With so much talented gyms and fighters to let compete what is there really to lose giving it a shot?

Every time I go out to a tournament I always see new faces, it shows that the sport is growing fast in this province and it will not slow. I have utter confidence in this province and believe that we deserve a shot at having a event like Grapplers Quest coming here and show people what we got. UFC holding off on putting a show here is a big mistake, don’t make the same one as once you do have one here you will only want more as you would see how passionate people are around here.

Grapplers Quest Canada 2010

Thanks for the well written blog, I think the direct approach, obviously it worked :-). I have plans to bring Grapplers Quest to Canada in 2010, guaranteed for one event, possibly two in two different locations. We had a great time at an ADCC show back in 2005 for the North American Trials in Kelowna that I refereed and sponsored several of the athletes. The turnout for competitors and attendees was very low, but it was a long time ago. How has the grappling scene expanded in Western Canada since 2005? How far from Kelowna are you? What major schools are in Edmonton? Looking forward to your response.

Grapplers Quest

there is Hayabusa that has

there is Hayabusa that has pro fighters like Ryan Jimmo, Nick Penner, Sheldon Westcott, Bill Mesi, BB Gabriel Wilcox, Ryan Ford and Tim Haugue. Then there is Arashido Martial Arts what has 4 gyms in Edmonton and a lot of members, every one of there gyms are packed full of guys lead by a black belt under Master Behring. Im not kidding there is a lot of guys under there banner. They sent 12 guys to Vegas for last grapplers quest and sad to hear some of them only got two matches in but speak so high of the trip and event cause they did not go there to experience vegas but to grapple. There is also A-Team, Parsons Martial Arts, I can go on and on there are soooo many gyms in Edmonton then Fort Mac, Red Deer, Calgary and Lethbridge always has large teams coming up to compete in Edmonton whats always nice, guys and gals like Nick Ring and Shayla Bird from BDB who compete in FILA and Worlds against top tier talent always are at smaller local shows. We get alot of Prince George and Kelowna guys also, Edmonton seems to be western Canada's fight center. I am not kidding when I say this place is huge into grappling, I can honestly say you would be shocked how big it is getting. I got in over 50 grappling matches this year missing a few tournaments and being eliminated a few times in single elimination so we do have something always going on. I am not actually from Edmonton if that says anything I am from a small town called Edson 2.5 hours west of Edmonton. Just always shocked to see how big this is getting and I think you should look into it, great venues here and great people to go with it. While our gym is small we have groups of 12-15 guys going to every single tournament and we are one of the smallest gyms around. Jason Macdonals gym always has large groups driving up to compete, Mike Yackulic I have to give him a large amount of praise who runs Arshido North runs most of the tournaments making money or losing it he always holds them, a lot of charity tournaments and he does a great job. A well know name like yours coming here would be absolutely huge and I think would only bring more attention to grappling in Alberta.
